Petland is Lying
Please VOTE NO on HB1237 and SB1698

Responsible pet stores don’t sell dogs. Petland is lying—they can’t and won’t stop puppy mills. HB1237/SB1698 enables Petland to continue selling dogs from out-of-state puppy mills. Don’t buy their lies and vote no on HB1237/SB1698.

Puppy Store lobbyists, led by Petland, are lying to you. Here are the facts.
FACT:   The vast majority of pet retailers DO NOT sell dogs. Stores like Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supermarket, and most of the largest pet retailers in the world voluntarily stopped selling puppies decades ago because they could not find healthy dogs in retail quantities.

FACT:   Pet store puppies can make humans sick.  The CDC recently linked two outbreaks of Campylobacter, a multi-antibiotic resistant disease to puppies sold in 13 states including Florida. Over half of these cases were directly linked to Petland puppies and employees.

FACT:  Often the stores knowingly sell sick puppies, costing customers thousands in veterinary bills and mislead customers by veterinarian self-referrals.  The Florida Attorney General and the Florida Department of Ag and Consumer Services have hundreds of complaints from consumers on record.

FACT:   In Florida, 95% of puppies sold in pet stores come from massive commercial breeding facilities (puppy mills). The majority of those are from five states: Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Ohio.  Florida cannot regulate out of state breeders, so Petland is LYING when they say their bill will stop puppy mills.

While this bill may seem reasonable by proposing regulations of pet stores, the stores know these regulations are completely unenforceable.  Every past attempt to regulate this industry has already proven unsuccessful at protecting consumers and public safety.
